School Flame Wars

The old school flame wars is on once again. Triggered by an UPCAT fanpage:

To which a UST student reacted:

What Thomasians are saying:

  • “Buti nalang we have ethics class para di natin patulan yan.”
  • “The UPCAT is just the first cut, surviving it is as hard as UST.”
  • “Kung alam niyo lang ilan ang na-kkickout after ng 1st sem palang…”
  • “The consequence of brains = loss of common sense.”
  • “Let’s pray for them.”
  • “Not all educated are civilized.”

What UPians are saying:

  • “It’s disappointing that the students are too proud.”
  • “Di kasi pumasa sa UPCAT.”
  • “It’s uncalled for.”
  • “He is pathetic for reacting that way.”
  • “Hindi naman sinabi na bobo ang taga UST, sinabi lang na mas mahirap ang UPCAT.”
  • “Fact is a fact. Truth hurts.”

I shared his post with the quick comment:

Siguro di ka pumasa ng UPCAT kaya bitter ka. School pride is age old war. Those who are wise know better than to let simple things such as affect them. Filing charges in court for this? You should see the t-shirt with the UP version of school acronyms ie. UST = UP Sana Tayo, ADMU = Ang Daming Mali Sa UPCAT, DLSU = Di Lumusot Sa UPCAT. So go on, file your case in court without realizing that there are issues more important than your butt-hurt pride.

It sounds mean? Okay, but don’t go nega on me yet. This is meant to be taken lightly. Regarding this issue, here are my extended 2c:

  • It is a fact that UPCAT is harder than most college exams, however exams do not define the intelligence of all students.
  • It is obviously not the official page of UPCAT, so don’t generalize UP students to be too proud.
  • Yes, UP students are proud. We are proud of our school like others are proud of their own. But many know how much is enough. Honor and Excellence.
  • School pride has been going on for so long, we should know better than to immediately react and be offended by silly words.
  • It’s never good for people to lose their morale just because they are smart. Shame to the person who wrote that post.

I feel the same sentiments as this guy.

To sum it up, I am against this behavior (UPCAT post) but in the end, it is up to us how we coolly react to a situation like this. Best not to get offended easily. After all school pride will always be there and some could get really offensive. Let’s just keep calm and look at it as a friendly competition.

To my dear Thomasian friends, don’t kill me!
